A/Prof. Thani is an Australian trained and qualified neurosurgeon, with more than 10 years of practice in Tasmania, specialising in adult and paediatric care.

A/Prof. Thani treats patients with all brain, spine and peripheral nerve related surgical problems. Brain tumours (including pituitary and skull base), aneurysm, arteriovenous malformations, cerebrospinal fluid disorders, trigeminal neuralgia and congenital brain malformation are some examples of brain related pathologies treated by A/Prof. Thani in both adults and children.

A/Prof. Thani has vast experience in managing challenging and complex brain related surgical problems using both open and minimally invasive (endoscopic) techniques. He is the first and the only practising neurosurgeon in Tasmania who performs awake brain surgery for optimal outcomes for patients.

A/Prof. Thani has fellowship training in complex spine surgery (Spine Program, University of Toronto, Canada). He is trained in both open and minimally invasive spine surgery techniques and treats all spine related pathologies including tumours, fractures, degenerative spinal disc diseases and spinal vascular pathologies. He has particular interest in the biomechanical impacts of surgery on the spine and the application of three-dimensional navigation techniques to spine surgery. He is involved in spinal implant design to bring novel concepts in spine surgery.

A/Prof. Thani sits on the Surgical Education and Training Board for Neurosurgical Society of Australasia. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and has a long-standing relationship with the University of Tasmania. These roles ensure that world class standards are always maintained in practice.

A/Prof. Thani is the Director and Head of Neurosurgery at the Royal Hobart Hospital, the Director of Centre for Neurosurgery and is a senior neurosurgery consultant at Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital.


Dr Imogen IBBETT

(MBBS, M Med Sci, FRACS)

Dr Ibbett is an Australian trained and qualified neurosurgeon. She has completed a cerebrovascular fellowship at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, UK and a RACS accredited Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery Fellowship at Mater Neurosciences Centre in Brisbane.

Dr Ibbett treats patients with all brain and spine related problems and is a consultant at both Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital and the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Dr Ibbett has extensive experience in the management of cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations of the brain in both the emergency and elective setting. Dr Ibbett also has expertise in surgery for brain tumours, cerebrospinal fluid disorders including endoscopic surgery, trigeminal neuralgia, and peripheral nerve entrapment.

Dr Ibbett also specialises in the management of traumatic and degenerative conditions of the spine. During her training she has worked at both the New South Wales and Queensland Spinal Cord Injury Units. Dr Ibbett provides treatment specific to the individual needs of her patients and is passionate about achieving the best possible functional outcome.


Mr Adam FOWLER

(MBBS (Hons 1), PhD (Medicine), FRACS)

Mr Fowler grew up in Sydney, New South Wales and attended the University of New South Wales. He was awarded the University Medal for outstanding academic performance, graduating in 1998. After completing internship and residency at Royal North Shore Hospital, he was commissioned in the Royal Australian Navy as a Medical Officer. During his time in the defence force, he saw active service in the Middle East and various peace-keeping and humanitarian missions. He subsequently commenced Neurosurgical studies in 2004 attached to major teaching hospitals in Sydney and Canberra. He obtained his PhD in Molecular Genetics of high-grade brain tumours at the Kolling Institute of Medical research from the University of Sydney in 2011.

Mr Fowler completed a Fellowship in Paediatric Neurosurgery at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in 2014 and was appointed as a Staff Specialist. In 2022 he regularly assisted the Neurosurgery Department at Royal Hobart Hospital until 2023 when he accepted a Staff Specialist Position.

He has interests in all aspects of adult neuro-oncology, common spinal pathologies and paediatric congenital and craniofacial conditions.
